Ely has been named one of the worst places to go for a city break in the UK – but we really don’t agree
In a recent study, the town of Ely in Cambridgeshire was ranked as the sixth worst place to stay in the whole of the UK (profanity!)
The same study, commissioned by HeatingForce.co.uk, found Cambridge and Peterborough to be among the best places to vacation, ranking second and sixth in the country, respectively.
So it’s surprising that somewhere just 20 minutes from the A10 (or an even shorter train journey) from Cambridge can be so poorly marked in comparison.
Ely was marked mostly because of his average rainfall, where the study found he was last conjoined with Cardiff – haven’t they heard of an umbrella ?!
It was also noted for the number and reviews of outdoor activities and the “quality” of its parks.
Critics of its ice cream parlors and restaurants also lowered its final score, only its sunshine redeeming the small town from the study.
Of course, city rankings are always going to penalize one as small as Ely, which is only the size of a small town.
We know that Ely is full of wonderful things to do, see, and eat, and it’s worth noting that it was recently voted the top city break destination by The Guardian, which praised its rich culture and fun outdoor activities.
The Guardian article acknowledged that it’s not just Ely’s fantastic story and legacy that makes him special.
Once visitors see the world famous cathedral, they can enjoy the charms of Ely’s bustling markets and bustling riverside attractions.

East Cambs Cllr David Ambrose Smith said: “It’s wonderful that Ely has been recognized alongside such a diverse list of cities. Ely packs a huge amount of variety in a small area. We’re really proud that The Guardian thinks we’re one of the best places to spend your free time in 2021.
“We have a lot to offer, not only as a city, but as a neighborhood. Those looking for inspiration this semester should visit the Explore East Cambs website to see the fantastic options available to them.

The wider district is also receiving accolades, including Wicken Fen, Dojima Sake Brewery at Fordham Abbey and Devil’s Dyke.
