The emergency incident at Fishbourne was a ‘false alarm’, but road and train line remain closed
Salthill Road in Fishbourne was closed as firefighters responded to an incident just before 9.20am.
“We have been alerted to reports of smoke coming from a train on the West Coastway line near Fishbourne station,” a spokesperson for the West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said.
“Fortunately, this was a false alarm and there was no fire.”
However, the triggered alarm has “an impact on the power supply” of the line, “which means that both lines are blocked”.
The spokesperson added: “We currently have Chichester and Bognor Regis fire trucks on the scene, and firefighters are liaising with Network Rail agents to keep the scene safe and help get passengers back to normal. movement.
“Salthill Road in Fishbourne has been closed in both directions to allow emergency service personnel to work safely and we are urging people to avoid the area for now this morning.
“Southern Rail has indicated that the two rail lines remain stranded for the time being and urges passengers to find alternative routes to complete their journey.”
Southern said staff were on site, evacuating trains that were not at stations.
