TOP WAINUI TEAM AGAIN – The Gisborne Herald
The Gisborne / Tairawhiti Surf Lifesaving Excellence Awards were presented last night and the club’s top honors went to Wainui for the second year in a row.
Over 100 people attended the awards ceremony held at The Vines at Matawhero.
Riversun Wainui took on the challenges of the Gisborne Kaiaponi Farms Waikanae and Dawson Building Midway clubs, as well as the Tolaga Bay and Ngati Porou clubs.
The award was accepted by Wainui President Andrew Putnam, who paid tribute to other clubs and said it was an “absolute honor” for Wainui to receive it.
“It’s no small feat and it really takes a team, with everyone doing their part for the common good. We have so many great people in our club who inspire and motivate others to always do their best, ”said Mr. Putnam.
Eastern Region Rescue Director Chaz Gibbons-Campbell said the awards recognize lifeguards’ important contribution to the safety of our beaches.
The prestigious Volunteer Lifeguard of the Year award went to Andrew Shelton of Waikanae in recognition of his many contributions to the club.
“As an avid Patrol member, IRB instructor, lifeguard instructor and IRB chief examiner, Andrew shows respect to all clubs while maintaining a professional and positive attitude,” said Mr. Gibbons-Campbell. “He has contributed to the Gisborne / Tairawhiti area as a patrol auditor and has volunteered as an examiner on a number of IRB exams and as a surf lifeguard. His time and efforts are greatly appreciated.
Nigel Hope from Waikanae was named Volunteer of the Year.
“Nigel plays an important role as the Patrol Coordinator in Waikanae and he facilitated a successful IRB program, investing time in each volunteer surf lifeguard.
“He is also an avid patroller, bringing his knowledge and skills not only to his club but also to other clubs in the Gisborne area,” said Mr. Gibbons-Campbell. “He has fantastic leadership and communication and has a positive club culture. “
The success of the IRB Waikanae under23 racing team of Connor Mitchell, Oliver Shivnan and Silke McNaught was recognized when they were named Sports Team of the Year.
They have been described as “superstars” at IRB regional and national events throughout the season.
Midway’s Miah Thorpe was named Officer of the Year and praised for her passion and dedication to the role.
Australia-based Midway’s Cory Taylor received the International Performance of the Year award for his efforts finishing fourth in Australia’s prestigious Nutri-Grain Ironman Series.
The regional awards culminate with the National Awards of Excellence on September 19 in Wellington.
